SAUK PILES ON ATHLETIC SUCCESS

It has been a good year for Sauk Valley Community College Athletics.  And it’s still October. The Skyhawks have seen record levels of success in their various athletic campaign to date, with a large part of the competitive year still to come.  Three teams have already punched tickets to their respective National Championships, and another has laid claim to a conference title with the Regional Championships still ahead.

First it was the Skyhawks men’s golf team, who dialed up a second place finish in the Region IV Championships earlier this month, giving them a berth to the National Championships to be held in Joplin, Missouri on May 19-22, 2020.  They were followed by the women’s tennis team, who finished the fall campaign with a third place finish in the Region IV Championships where the top three teams all advance to the National Tournament held in Tucson, Arizona on May 3-8, 2020.  Over the past weekend, Sauk’s harriers ran at the Region IV Championships held in Galesburg, and came away with 6 of 8 individuals qualifying for the National Championships to be held on November 9th at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.  And now, as of last evening, the Skyhawk Volleyball Team claimed a share of the Arrowhead Conference Championship, finishing the conference season at 9-1 overall.  They head to the Regional Championships to be held at the College of Lake County on November 9-10.

“We have seen amazing success so far this season.  By far, we are off to the best start in school history.  Sending three teams to their respective National Championships in three tries is awesome, and now Volleyball has claimed a conference title as well, we are just thrilled with our successes at this point in the year” said third year Director of Athletics, Mike Stevenson. “Our teams and coaches have clearly been dialed in this year, and all this has happened before we even tip off the winter season with men’s and women’s basketball.”

Volleyball resumes play with one more home match (Sophomore Night) on November 5th at 6PM vs. Bryant and Stratton College.  The men’s basketball team begins action on Friday, November 1st with play in the Sauk Classic, as they face Prairie State College in an 8PM matchup.  The women’s basketball team takes to the court for their first game on Saturday, November 2nd with a home game against Rock Valley.  Tip-off is set for 1PM in the Sauk gymnasium.
